Editor's Note

The issue of this magazine is MLL (multiple language learner) education and working towards its improvement which is a very relevant topic today. America is a nation of immigrants and is constantly growing. Both adults and children are arriving in the United States and it is important that they are given a solid foundation of education when they arrive. Unfortunately, MLL education and programs often fall short on teaching MLL students the English language, due to lack of teachers and funding. Hopefully a newfound awareness of MLL programs and students can better improve their education. 

The report is an infographic that gives a brief introduction to the problem at hand. Immersion and MLL classrooms are defined, as well as brief examples as to why this issue is relevant and important. The profile is an interview with a kindergarten teacher who works with MLL students. While she is not specifically a MLL teacher, she is qualified to work with them. She is very passionate about her job and her students, making her a great choice to interview. The commentary is a more in-depth version of the report, detailing the importance of MLL education and how to improve it.

Through this process of research and editing, I learned that there is not a lot of information about this topic, making it all the more important. Because of the lack of information regarding MLL education, it is necessary to educate people so that they can better understand the importance and problems, and learn how to help. 

Greta Everett

Greta is a first-year student at Salt Lake Community College and plans on transferring to a state university in Fall 2021. She is getting her bachelor’s in elementary education and hopes to work at a dual-immersion school and/or with MLL students when she graduates college. When she is not busy with schoolwork, Greta often spends her time playing her flute and guitar, as well as dancing, writing, and spending time with her family.
