The Importance of MLL Education
Why is this so important, and what can educators do to help their MLL students succeed?
Why is this Relevant?
America is constantly growing, and since the 2020 election, America has been accepting more and more immigrants. As of 2020, "more than 40 million people living in the U.S. were born in another country, accounting for one-fifth of the world's migrants," and that number continues to grow. 1
Why is this Important?
Because so many students nowadays are MLL or have MLL parents, the importance of their education is even more important. Unfortunately, very few educated are qualified to help them. In the past decade, "10 percent of U.S. public school students struggle with the English language, while just 1 percent of its teachers are qualified to instruct them," showing how important this has become. 2
What can Educators do?
Educators, whether they are certified or not, can help by "...incorporating multiculturalism in the classroom and developing culturally inclusive teaching materials..." Educators can also build relationships with their students to help them feel more comfortable so learning a new language does not seem as daunting. 3
What are ESL Classrooms?
ESL classrooms are segregated classrooms in public schools. In an ESL classroom, "the students come from various language backgrounds, and the teacher only speaks English." Typically, ESL students will spend their entire school day in the one classroom with limited to no contact with native-English speaking students. 4
What are Immersion Classrooms?
Immersion classrooms are classrooms that native-English speakers are already attending. Sometimes ESL students are "immersed" in English speaking classes instead of having their own classroom, even though they often speak little to no English.
